The Use of Fashion in Flash Prose, Microfiction, and Prose Poems, Antioch University Los Angeles, December 2019
Details like clothing and accessories convey much about character, setting, and conflict in a compressed space, including elements such as socioeconomic struggles, class warfare, and other social justice issues. In this hybrid lecture/discussion seminar, we first defined flash prose and its subgenres of microfiction, flash nonfiction, and prose poems. Then, we used modern and older examples of clothing and accessories in these forms to discuss the use of fashion to convey great detail. We even incorporated a meta costume party during the presentation to spur a writing exercise. Examples we explored together included writing by Silvina Ocampo, Lydia Davis, George Saunders, Khadijah Queen, Kathy Fish, Jamaica Kincaid, Tara Isabel Zambrano, and more. Handouts provided.
